Oregon Engineers Week Inspires High Schoolers with Panels, Field Trips, and Career Exploration
Approximately 240 students and teachers, along with 200 engineers, attended the Oregon Engineers Week event on Tuesday, February 24, at the Portland DoubleTree Hotel.
The event featured an exhibit hall and career fair, optional morning panel sessions, and a banquet lunch where students were seated with an engineer at each table while listening to a keynote speaker. In the afternoon, students participated in field trips to one of 11 local engineering hot spots before returning to the exhibit hall for end‑of‑day activities. The entire program was designed for high school sophomores and juniors.
The program’s keynote speaker was Rick Huddle, a specialist in energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions—and who is working on a statewide program to transform energy use in California.
Huddle’s career path includes a 10+ year long hiatus from engineering to work as a storyteller, artist, and educator. He enjoys talking about his work as an engineer, the shift from working on individual projects to a large-scale statewide program and the value of collaboration.
